    SD/HD discrepancies, between UltraViolet providers

So I wanted to get an online copy of one of my favorite movies, The Karate Kid... via UltraViolet/Vudu.

Looking at Vudu's "Disc to Digital" site I see I can bring my DVD to Walmart and convert it for $2 -- it's only offered in SD. (No "$5 for HD" is even offered as a choice, like it usually is for other titles.) Using the Vudu "In Home Disc to Digital" app (in Windows for beta) I see I have the same option at the same price. Then I go straight to Vudu's site and see that if I want to buy it outright, they're only offering the SD version, so I guess this all makes sense.

Then I check with the Flixster, their Disc to Digital app on my Mac says I can pay $2 for SD or $5 for HD. So I go for the latter! Woohoo!

As expected, the title shows up in my Vudu library. But, lo and behold, only the SD version is showing up for me. I suppose this makes sense, but it still surprised me, and I feel like I wasted that extra $3, just to get an HD version that isn't available on the Vudu.

So as you shop around services, deciding between Vudu, Flixster and CinemaNow to convert your titles, be aware that Vudu will only show the HD version if Vudu actually sells the HD version. Even if you pay extra for the HD version, you're not going to get it on Vudu if Vudu doesn't have it.

    Just wanted to share.

By the same token, the copies of UV titles on Vudu that are SD show up as HD in CinemaNow so I don't know how they figure out which version to provide on these sites?

Keep in mind that if and when VUDU does get the HD version, you should have it automatically -- as long as it shows HD in your UV locker, you'll be eligible to receive it when any supporting service adds it. So, may seem like a $3 waste now, but one day you'll have a nice surprise when you check your VUDU account. ;-)

I've done this on a few titles myself like GHOSTBUSTERS 2, figuring it's something VUDU will eventually get an HDX master for... someday!

I just purchased the movie "Next" using the Disc to Digital Home version and when I inserted the blu-ray disk, the only option was "HDX". After the purchase I went to the "My Video" section and the movie showed up but only in "SD". I called customer service and they said they were not offering refunds on the "BETA" program. I asked to speak with the supervisor and then she offered a $3.99 credit on my account. I'm surprised because in the past I would have no problems getting a refund. Also, be very careful before getting any movie on the HOME D2D because even though the option might say it's "HDX", the movie might only be available in "SD". Learned my lesson for next time.

Update, more than 2 years later: I was pleasantly surprised to see that Karate Kid appeared as a "new purchase," in HDX, in my library a few weeks back. Automatically.
