Who are the studios with non-UltraViolet titles

I use My Wishlist to save titles that I own and I am waiting for Disc-to-Digital. Sometimes I will also place movies that I don?t own and I am waiting for these to be UltraViolet before I will buy them.

I checked the studio for all these movies and created the following list based on my wishlist. I decided to make a list of studios that are either not making their movies available for UV or still have movies that are not UV titles.

Obviously, the majority of my titles are MGM and Disney and the studio with the third most titles in my wishlist is 20th Century Fox .

Here is the rest of the list:

    Lionsgate
    Warner Brothers
    DreamWorks
    Dimension Films
    Touchstone Pictures
    Paramount Pictures
    Relativity Media
    Millennium Entertainment
    Well Go USA
    Echelon Studios
    Image Entertainment
    Legend Films, Inc.
    MiraMax Films
    Phase 4 Films

I know that there are other studios because VUDU doesn't have several movies that I would like to see added.

Re: Who are the studios with non-UltraViolet titles

I do not think the process of making a title from a studio's catalog available in UV is just a decision. For instance, one manager decides to make a title UV/D2D and then some engineer presses a button and "Poof".

I feel pretty confident in saying there is some capital involved.

The decision would be if a studio thinks they will make this capital expense back from the EST sales. The D2D fees seem nominal and hardly capable of recouping capital expenditures. Instead, the studio would need to think that future EST would make it justified.

This is a broad stroke description. Obviously, when drilling down to specific titles there are other reasons as well.

For instance, 20th Century Fox has "Fantastic 4" and "F4:Rise of the Silver Surfer" available on UV/D2D. I have them in my library as a result. These both too are Marvel Studio titles. However, other titles from Marvel Studios are absent. It is speculated that the process stopped as a result of Disney Studios taking over the Marvel Studios brand.

I am pretty confident in saying the decision to make titles available to the UV eco-system is an economic executive decision on a title by title basis. The question the executive is asking, "If I spend the money to make this title UV, will I get that money back and make a profit too?"

According to Mr. FMBB, we have 6,814 available to us for D2D conversion, at last count with more being added just about every week. Clearly, those executives are answering the question "YES" pretty often.

BTW, I should note, even though 20th Century Fox is slow like MGM on their catalog titles, they seem to be a UV exclusive studio on their new releases. At least going forward, 20th Century Fox will be adding to the UV eco-system from new titles.

Also, I do not think it should be expected that there is a studio out there that has 100% of their catalog titles converted into UV/D2D for EST. That to me is an unreasonable expectation.

I don't think we really know what all plays into the UV decision making...and I am sure that there is some money involved, but I doubt that it's anything substantial enough to play a major factor in the final decision.

          Agreed!

It would also be nice if VUDU offered Stargate in HDX, instead of just SD. Adding the Director's Cut would also be a plus.

Re: Who are the studios with non-UltraViolet titles

My ultraviolet wishlist has almost 60 titles:

              15 are MGM
              15 are FOX
              3 are Paramount
              7 are Universal
              4 are Dreamworks
              3 are Miramax
              2 are Lionsgate
              2 are WB
              2 are Sony

MGM and Fox would make a lot of money if they added more UV titles. Most I would purchase EST, because I don't own them.

                Mr. EP,

thank you for taking the time to compile this information. I respect your knoledge and was wondering if you will let me know the process you took in identifying the underling studio for a given title.

I too have the same type of list and want to do the same breakdown for mine:

                thank you.

Re: Who are the studios with non-UltraViolet titles

After all the UV additions this week, my list has changed quite a bit. I removed the ones with Disney distribution rights. As you can see, The UV studio's appear to have added most of their titles to the UV capable list. My point here is that there is not a lot of room for growth until the Non-UV studio's (and I am including MGM here, as they have yet to add any catalog titles) start releasing UV titles.

                  15 are MGM
                  7 are Universal
                  5 are FOX
                  5 are WB
                  2 are Paramount
                  2 are Lionsgate
                  2 are Sony
                  2 are Dreamworks Animation

I think the UV studio with the most room for growth is Lionsgate. I went through the first 500 titles, sorted alphabetically, and only 257, a little over half, were UV. Granted, about 100 of them were made for TV releases, such as Barney, Workout Titles, and Bob the Builder.

So, if I were to rate the biggest offenders, I would say, MGM, Lionsgate, Universal.

Re: Who are the studios with non-UltraViolet titles

Here are my top "offenders"...20th Century Fox improved on my list slightly.

                    1. Lionsgate
                    2. Warner Brothers
                    3. A tie between DreamWorks and Dimension Films
                    4. Touchstone Pictures
                    5. 20th Century Fox
                    6. Universal

I am not counting MGM since they are not a UV studio. If they were then they would be my number 1.

I am also not counting Touchstone Pictures since they are essentially Disney. If I were to include them then they would be tied for 2nd place.

Touchstone is owned by Disney, Paramount has nothing to do with it. Also many Dimension films are owned by Touchstone, so I didn't include them. Why don't you tell us the number of each studio on your wishlist. I am curious to know how many WB films are on your list.

You're right, I guess it was DreamWorks I was thinking of.

Up until 2008, most Dreamworks films were distributed by Paramount. At that time, Dreamworks agreed to produce 30 new films, starting with I am Number Four. So it may be 5 more years for that contract is complete. It's rather ironic, if you ask me, because Dreamworks was started by a former Disney employee who became angry with the company.

DreamWorks films are fragmented at best since Paramount has distribution rights to the live action catalog prior to Q3 2005. The new live action titles are currently distributed by Disney through the Touchstone Pictures label.

In terms of animation, Paramount's deal with DreamWorks Animation ended at the end of 2012 and DWA's new deal with Fox took affect on 1/1/2013. The Croods will be the first animated film to be distributed by Fox.

Based on DWA's agreement with Paramount, DWA kept the distribution rights for streaming and any future technology.

wow, that is complicated above my paygrade. Sadly, the speculation still ends at the same station. A title which is not apart of the D2D program leaves us at the mercy of the studio. There are some titles whose legal entity is subject to debate, but knowing is only of moderate comfort.

As we saw this past week, it takes an executive decision. 20th Century Fox releasing a carpet bombing raid of titles into the D2D program was obviously one such occurrence. MGM seems to lack the funds to make such a move. Disney is being obstinate.
