SD quality and D2D - I broke a cardinal rule...

As it appears there's no hope in the near future for bug fixes in the D2D app and HD upgrade options on certain movies I broke a rule I have. That rule; never D2D less than HD/HDX quality.

They finally wore me down so I did SD quality using the Vudu app on discs it actually reads properly. I figured may as well D2D for a buck and if one day they allow a fair upgrade price then upgrade. If not I can live with SD.

I don't think the studios will give HD encodes anytime soon on these titles anyway. However, I anticipate The Exorcist will have HD/HDX because they're re-releasing the bluray with an Ultraviolet code in October. So no D2D for me on that one yet.

    Here's my list:

    01. Superman IV: The Quest for Peace
    02. Superman: The Movie
    03. Private Parts (Howard Stern 1997)
    04. Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult
    05. House Party
    06. Dreamgirls
    07. Blue Collar Comedy Tour Rides Again (App has a problem recognizing BCCT: One For The Road)
    08. Soylent Green

OOPS!!! Forgot to D2D House Party 2 & 3 maybe later before the promotion ends.

I have several movies I would like to convert but will wait until they're available in HDX:

    1. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
    2. A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master
    3. Wes Craven's New Nightmare
    4. Hollow Man
    5. I Spit on Your Grave (1978)
    6. Pure Country
    7. Superman The Movie
    8. Superman IV The Quest for Peace
    9. While She Was Out

I held off on doing any SD conversions. But after reaching 1,000 HDX titles, I decided to get a couple on my favorites that were SD-only. The quality is all over the place. Some look really good. Others are absolutely horrendous.

Victory (1981) is worthless. It looks like a 320x240 MPEG-1 file on my 60-inch plasma TV.

The thought both Hollow Man (2000) and Abominable (2006) were pretty lousy. Lots of blocking and artifacts. Next time I watch them, I'll just use the DVD/BD.

On the other hand, I thought The Orphanage (2008), The Devil's Backbone (2001) and Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon (2007) looked fine. I wish they were HDX. But I can live with the SD version for streaming, and I've still got the BDs.

I'm willing to hold my fire and wait for the HDX versions on anything that's not available yet. I feel bad enough that I've double-, triple- and quadruple-dipped on so many titles over the years that I don't want to do so on digital versions.

I'm glad I did some in SD early on, with the 50% off promo I'm upgrading most of those to HDX with a net saving of $.50 each. And, still, some movies I just can't justify spending the extra money for HDX.

Usually actions flicks get HD, people talking get SD, but I've changed my opinion on that.

If you upgrade some older films to HD, the video quality just doesn't look HD. For example, the quality on my Blade Runner HD conversion looks crappy; I'm not sure what the extra dollars got me.

Older films can be good in HDX, though, it depends on the source. I remember years before Bluray or HD-DVD I flipped on HDNet on cable, and I was taken aback that Deathtrap (1982) rivaled the PBS full HD nature documentaries that I used to consider my gold standard to show off what full HD quality was. The only thing it was lacking in was color depth, but the resolution was stunning.

Edit: Of course, whether you care about older movies in HD, especially non-action movies, is another matter. I used my 5 free SD conversions from Flixster for Christopher Guest mockumentaries, Milk, and Glengary Glen Ross, movies that are about the dialogue and story and not the visuals. (In fact, Milk was produced to have a 60s-70s quality of picture.)

Yes, the first DVD to HDX conversion I noticed this on was "Domestic Disturbance". The HD (1080p) version doesn't look good at all.

Good choice. I also broke the rule on these gems.
