    New UltraViolet Marketing Strategy, and what this means for Indiana Jones

    I have noticed that in the past month or two, every UV studio, has switched the marketing on their discs from Digital Copy to Digital HD with the UV symbol next to it. Paramount doesn't have a new release coming anytime soon, so I can't verify if they are going to do the same, but I suspect this has been an agreed upon marketing term. I think this accomplishes two things. First, it tells consumers that the package includes UV, even if the sticker is not present, because sometimes it's not. It also unifies the brand, so that no one will be confused as they were in the past, if a digital copy is compatible with iTunes just by looking at the top bar. This is good for UltraViolet, because I think more people pay attention to that bar at the top than the stickers on the packaging.

    Also Paramount today announced that a new Indy boxset is coming that includes Digital HD for the first time. I think this must mean it will be UV because it has been available digitally before.

    I'm confused -- nowhere on that linked page about the Indy box set does it say anything about Ultraviolet. It says "Digital Copy (available via iTunes)." Why wouldn't it mention UV, if in fact it was UV?

      It's says Digital HD AND iTunes Digital Copy. The whole point of my post is that Digital HD means UV.

        Thanks.

        I too noticed the Digital HD logo creeping into packaging. I didn't realize that it was as unified as you have discovered.

        I agree this is a good idea. Consumers today demand HD playback. Having it clear on a BRD package that the consumer can have stream playback in HD takes away ambiguity, which is a good thing.

        It also makes clear that UV is an HD playback service.

          The releases I have read say digital copy via iTunes with no mention of UV. I think Ultraviolet is going to miss out on this one.

          For the first time ever, the first three films in the Indiana Jones saga will be available individually in high definition when they arrive on Digital HD November 19, 2013 and on Blu-ray with an iTunes digital copy December 17, 2013 from Lucasfilm and Paramount Home Media Distribution.

            Digital HD is not synonymous with UV. Disney is using the terms for Monsters University with a link to buy on iTunes or Amazon.

            For Indiana Jones I bet it will mean the option to buy a digital copy on iTunes, Amazon and maybe Vudu or Cinemanow.

              Notice that it says Digital HD AND with an iTunes Digital Copy included. So the Digital HD version will still be available at vudu, it just won't be included with the blu-ray.

                Right, that's what I said. And probably not UV. I would consider rebuying these Blus if they came with UV. I will not for the iTunes copy though.

                  also note the break down included with each disc

                  The disc includes the following:
                  Teaser Trailer (HD)
                  Theatrical Trailer (HD)
                  Digital Copy (available via iTunes) makes me think it will be Digital Copy disc style


                  so no Vudu or UV code will be included unless Walmart, Best Buy or possible even Target now does some kind of preorder that includes it.

                        Looks like I was ahead of the curve with my observation. Home Media Magazine is reporting that studio's will Adopt New Digital Monikers. Even Disney is adopting this practice. Now all studio's will stop using the term digital copy on their packaging. This is good news. It gets us much closer to a standard. I think that if UV retailers like Target Ticket and CinemaNow grow a lot it will force Disney to adopt UV.

                          Wow...a new standard, without a standard. You still don't have a clue what you get with a 'Digital HD' labled product, without additional labeling (UV, iTunes, Amazon, etc.). At least we will be guaranteed an HD copy of releases with the 'HD' tag, whataver format that may be.
