    CES 2014 News?

Anyone heard about anything coming up at CES involving Ultraviolet? I haven't heard much. We've gotten some good news out if the past couple years though even if some of it did not pan out in the end (Amazon, MGM, Samsung disc 2 digital).

It's too early for news, but we can always offer our predictions. I think DEG will announce at least 21 million users. I also think that two new retailers will be unveiled. And we will hear something about the CFF as well.

I know we had some minor news last December. I think the biggest pre-CES news was that UV would have their own booth last year. Probably is too early, but once it does start leaking and/or rolling out we can post here. Hopefully we get some good stuff this year (that actually pans out).

Hopefully it will be more of a seeing it in action, or better yet an actual CFF rollout during the show(assuming it doesn't happen before then).

I doubt it will launch during the show, but they have already said it will launch in the first quarter, so perhaps they will announce the actual date.

I missed the announcement. Can you share a link?

CES 2013 said 10 free UV movies with BD and HDTV purchase. It never happened:

"Per the partnership, consumers who later this year purchase select, connected TVs and Blu-Ray players from participating manufacturers will receive up to 10 free UltraViolet movies as an "UltraViolet starter campaign." Participating partners include LG, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba and Vizio."

The promotion is still happening. The delayed CFF launch is the cause. The CFF specification was just finalized November on 23. When the hardware with embedded UV playback is released, then the CFF will be deployed, and the promotion will begin. I believe that will be in the first quarter of next year.

Here's a recent article predicting that UV will have new retailers, possibly a cable operator. Any other predictions?

Intel posted some UltraViolet news on their site yesterday. I wonder if we will hear any more details about it at CES? I also wonder how this will work. Vudu and other platforms already work on PC's, so I wonder if this means CFF will play natively on a PC without additional software? That would be really cool, but how would they authenticate your UV account??

An other predictions, before next week?

That actually kind of worries me. As much as I love Vudu and D2D (and I really do) they have been pretty terrible at launches. The In-store service launch was a joke (and that's putting it nicely) and the home d2d Beta is still lagging far behind in recognizing discs compared to the competition. I hope it is launched across multiple services so there is hope that at least one of them gets it right because let's be honest, none of the services were great at the beginning (and a couple are still not so great).

I hope all the delays for the CFF have been worth it, and the launch goes a lot smoother than the launch of UV overall.

They also better have a HUGE list of devices compatible with the CFF, because I am not buying new hardware. It also needs to be compatible with home media server software like Plex, PlayOn, etc.

I run plex from my laptop to two Rokus. I can not think of a reason I would ever want to watch that way instead of native Vudu.

To have a CFF copy on a local HDD, layer onto that the admin of plex seems like wasted effort to me when I can simply press 'click' on a title in my Vudu library and the media will be served up for me.

The advantage of letting your media be streamed vs. running digital copies on a local HDD with a client server setup makes the plex route not to have any benifit and ends up just draining time needlessly.

The problem is bandwidth limitations from ISPs. This is a barrier not only for UV, but streaming media in general. The simple fact is, until providers start offering considerably more bandwidth than they currently do, streaming media (movies in particular) will be limited. If you are lucky enough to have an unlimited connection, great. However, this is not true for a majority of the population.

Plex is also now compatible with the Chromecast, which is a big deal. It means I can finally control all media from my phone. As is stands, no UV provider has rolled out Chromecast support, which is a shame. Vudu has stated they are working on it, but no updates have been posted in months.

The only problem I have with Plex, and this isn't the fault of Plex itself, is that most of my devices (Android phones/tablets, PS3) don't support the NTFS file system. As such, I am unable to stream most of my 1080p files, which are generally over the 4gb limit of the FAT32 system, to any devices running either Linux or a Linux-derived OS.

As far as setup, Plex was a snap. Download software to PC, install, configure folders, done. All that's left to do is download the app to your device and there you go. All media from that PC in your hands. I'm obviously more tech-savvy than the average user, but I can't see it being too much trouble for someone with a basic understanding of computers.

Compatibility with home media server software is important, and it would be a big mistake for the DECE to not support such solutions when rolling out the CFF.

I would much rather have the files locally on my network than stream them straight from vudu. For several reasons, One is, that I know that the aspect ratio, video quality, and sound mix will be the best available, because it is encoded by the studio's themselves, and not vudu. Vudu has a history of problems when it comes to quality. I will keep buying from them, but I prefer to get the master straight from the source. There is also the issue of bandwidth, file portability, and sorting.

I tried putting Plex on my machine, in order to stream video's to my roku. Couldn't get it to work. It was too clunky, and there was no wizard to guide me through setup. And I work in the IT department. I can figure out most things when it comes to the internet. I would much rather it be compatible with DLNA hardware. Also, I hope XBMC will support it.
