      Those are all wonderful and rational reasons above and they make sense to me, but average Joe consumer won't be applying that line of thinking. If Amazon pushes the advertising they will compete.

      Not all Apple users are so heavily invested in iTunes movies that they wouldn't consider this unit, and not everyone is thrilled with Chromecast. And most people have close to zero technical background so they are not even looking at other android devices or Roku plug ins etc.

      Games for this device will not be $60, probably $5-10 at max. Amazon is claiming an average price of $1.85 per game.

      Anyways, I'll let Jeff know what you think.
      I wouldn't say dead, they will obviously sell some. My main point is that the device doesn't really fill a need. It's a product to solve a problem that doesn't exist. Just my personal take on it.

      The point I was trying to make with the game prices is that, at such a low price point, I'd have equally low expectations for the quality, unless it will be chock full of in-app purchases.

        They posted more apps today. I see the screen shots of the Flixster client, and they do show the Ultraviolet login screen.

            IMHO, if they're not supporting the Kindle why in the world would they support Fire TV? It would make absolutely no sense because they are both Android OS devices, so one App for both. Flixster didn't make an App specifically for Fire TV, it's the App they've always had in the App store for all Android devices.

              We don't know who's holding up the relationship - Amazon or Vudu. Amazon might feel Vudu is too direct a competitor, or it could be that Vudu doesn't like the rev share agreement. Who knows?

              So depending on what you think the holdup is there, the business dynamics are a little different on a streaming box, which could result in a different outcome. It's a reasonable assumption that you'd get a lot more traction with a movie collection app on a device that can be pumped through your home theater system than on a tablet. With anticipated greater volume, Vudu might be willing to bend a little more.

              And then there's the pressure from Fire TV owners. It will be stronger than that of Kindle Fire owners because of the living room factor and because most Kindle owners who really care about that are happy enough sideloading the Vudu app. I assume there's no equivalent workaround on the Fire TV.

              So, yeah, I do expect a more serious effort to get Vudu onto the Fire TV than was made with the Kindle. If Vudu has announced something to the contrary, I'm still waiting to hear it.

                I guess I just don't see this happening at all. As for Amazon getting pressure from Fire TV owners, never gonna happen. I don't think there are, or will be enough Vudu subscribers that have Fire TV to even make Amazon stop yawning. Even if there are a lot of owners, people do a lot of talking in forums but never really act upon that big talk. Do you think that (so called pressure) stopped Amazon from raising Amazon Prime membership pricing? Amazon from the look of it is trying to be like Apple by locking you into their ecosystem and don't expect a change from that plan no matter what the public thinks or wants. Remember when they were supposed to join Ultraviolet? Hasn't happened and probably never will now based on the direction they're going.

                I'm not being pessimistic only realistic. Amazon doesn't have any UV streaming provider Apps in their store (obviously by design) and no Flixster doesn't really count. Flixster points users to other stores for purchasing movies and TV shows, so free advertisement. Does Vudu, Target, Cinemanow, or MGO do this...not that I've seen. From a business standpoint Vudu is an Amazon competitor and likewise. I love the fact that Vudu is a UV streaming provider and doesn't lock you into a particular ecosystem or hardware but Amazon is quite the opposite. Because of this I avoid Amazon hardware like the plague. Obviously this is only one dumb guy's opinion and my points may be baseless.

                      That's just the Kindle Fire and even that's meaningless since you can sideload the VUDU app onto the Kindle Fire HD and HDX and it works just fine.

                      Thankfully the Fire TV device is superfluous for me since I have an Oppo-103 which has the VUDU app and 3D and DD+ 7.1 support. But I had to get the Roku stick in order to add Amazon Instant Video. I'm not sure why that wasn't included on the actual player.

                          As with anything there are going to be things one likes and dislikes.

                          Overall I would say my Fire is my favorite streamer now. It's much faster, smoother, and simply more "polished" than my day to day workhorse Roku 3.

                          That said I thought I might be able to live with the Flixster app for UltraViolet. Not as nice as Vudu but it had it's own charm and simplicity. First movie came up in HD and looked great. Every subsequent movie "can not be played in HD at this time" and looks horrible. Plus it spits out all these coded messages while it's getting the movie ready.

                          If Vudu would do a Fire app I would TOTALLY ditch the Roku 3 now. No hesitation. Even without 3D. I would be willing to switch to the Oppo BDP-103 just for Vudu 3D.

                            I bought a FireTV myself, just because I love the Amazon service. However I am returning the device back to amazon.

                            The design of its good and all, and it has potential, however it lacks any real content to be honest. I was hoping it could replace my SmartTV but it fell way short.

                            No HBOGo. No Vudu. Those two alone are deal breakers for me. Granted they did have Showtime Anytime but that is enough for me to justify and 150$ expenditure.

                            With the exception of the Showtime Anytime app, there is nothing that the Amazon FireTV does that I dont already get with my SmartTV. And even if I didnt have a SmartTV, I think I would prefer going with either Roku or a Smart Enabled bluray player over the Amazon FireTV at this time simply because of the lack of content.

                              FireTV is only $99, did you pay $150? Content will grow over time, but you are right there is no compelling reason to get one if you are satisfied with your other options.

                                Flixster sell's software. Not in ALL their applications but they DO sell. Oddly enough depending on the application they will give you the price to but from them AND list all other services selling including Amazon, iTunes, Vudu, etc.
