Fandango Forum Guidelines

The Fandango are designed to help viewers get the most out of their Fandango experience. Here, Fandango customers may post information, questions, ideas, etc. on the subject of Fandango Streaming and Fandango Streaming related issues (home theater, entertainment, etc). Although the primary purpose of these forums is to help Fandango customers with questions and/or problems with their Fandango Streaming service, there are also off-topic areas available within the Fandango Forums for users to chat with like-minded people, subject to the limitations below.

Please post all comments in English. When posting a comment in the Fandango Forums, please conduct yourself in a respectful and civil manner. While we respect that you may feel strongly about an issue, please leave room for discussion.

    iTunes / Vudu Comparison:

    I am hoping to put together an objective comparison between the iTunes video services and that of Vudu. There are many iTunes loyalist who find it superior and I just do not understand their reasoning and felt perhaps a thread where the pros/cons were vetted would be helpful.

    For transparency, I own an iPhone 5s which I carry with me at all times and also carry an iPad 2 into work and home each night. My wife too has an iPhone 5s and an iPad gen 3 w/retina @64Gb. Both of our children carry re-purposed iPhone 4's as use as iPod touches. Our home has an AppleTV connected to our living room plasma. Our family is very iOS centric.

    A few notes:
    1. The Vudu app has low rating in the AppStore. As in any SDLC (software development life cycle), it has been improving. Watching iTunes videos on a portable iOS device has a bug with meta data which has existed for five year. For my opinion, I consider the two iOS playback apps to be very close in quality.
    2. In-home playback for iTunes requires the purchase of a AppleTV set-top box.
    3. In-home playback for Vudu requires the purchase of a Roku set-top box, if the TV is older and there is no PlayStation, X-Box, Chrome Cast, app enabled BRD player.
    4. To convert a physical disc into an iTunes format takes a lengthy process of decrypting, handbreak'ing, adding meta data, and file storing.
    5. Neither mobile app has sorting functions.
    6. iTunes support may have a charge. Vudu is free.
    7. I think it is telling that the name of the Apple video service is called iTunes. The word "Tunes" in the name indicates it was initially deployed as a music service. The video service has been bolted onto the existing music service. Vudu was built from the ground up as an HD video service.

    I agree that Vudu is superior to iTunes and I have about 10 times more movies on Vudu than on iTunes. However, I wouldn't put too much value on the free email support at Vudu because I have never received a response using email but only when calling support.

      #4 is very much not a point of equality. In fact, I'd remove that check mark from the table. Indeed, one can add movies to their library, but are they then portable across devices? I can't even see my ripped and added movies on another machine using home sharing (maybe I'm missing a step). If they are not secure, uploaded where they can be streamed or redownloaded later, they are not the same.

        support@vudu.com. I use it for minor issues and I think I have always received a response. It takes ~24 hrs though.

        I respectfully disagree. With iTunes Home Sharing running on a PC/Laptop, I am able to view movies on any iOS device on the same logical LAN. It is true though that those titles are not available for download via Home Sharing. For that, you need to tether the device to the iTunes computer.

          I don't think I would compare disc-to-digital capabilities of UV or VUDU with basically "ripping" a dvd in itunes.

              It's good to be objective, but better to be truthful. It's my understanding that iTunes doesn't have a disc-to-digital feature.

              Doesn't iTunes allow you to create playlists? Vudu doesn't.

              Doesn't Vudu (or UV) allow accounts to be linked and shared with family members? I think iTunes does as well.

              Vudu is one of several UV retailers, meaning that there are multiple playback services available.

              Your note #3 is not accurate. I would compare the actual devices instead. You can watch Vudu in home on any of the Vudu-enabled HDTVs, Vudu-enableda Blu-ray players, a Roku streaming device (or other supported streaming devices like NeoTV), Chromecast, PlayStation, or X-Box. Of course any HDTV or Blu-ray player that is enabled with some other UV service works as well.

              Some iTunes content includeds iTunes Extras (such as an extended commentary track) that is not available on Ultraviolet.

              If Vudu loses the rights to a film that you own, it's still in your digital locker. If iTunes loses rights then you no longer have your movie.

              Vudu will allow you to switch from HDX to HD or SD if you are having bandwidth problems. Check me on this, but I don't think that iTunes offers this.

              Vudu always requires an internet connection to watch your movies. iTunes does not when you download the movie to your device.

              Vudu doesn't offer subtitles, does iTunes?

              You might want to compare the download options. I hear that iTunes is superior than UV, but I don't know.

                Yes, there is some extra content available on iTunes that is not available on Vudu. The same is true visa-versa. The new Vudu Extra Plus is an example.

                I just find it futile to get too much in the weeds in the comparison of bonus features.

                I have updated the note #3, per your correction.

                It is true that Vudu requires an internet connection to watch, when your playback device has no storage. This is the case with the Roku, but most others like the PS3, X-Box, BRD players, have some measure of storage that allow for off-line viewing. The Roku does not and does require an internet connection.

                However, this is the same as iTunes in the cloud playback on an AppleTV. It too does not have any storage so it would require an internet connection to play back any title stored on the iTunes Cloud service, just like the Roku would require an internet connection to playback all Vudu content.

                  Vudu does not always require an internet connection. You can download the movies to your computer using vudu to go.

                  Vudu does offer subtitles. They are just called closed captions but are the same thing. You have to enable them in settings.

                  The download option in iTunes is superior to vudu and UV, but as soon as the Common File Format is released, that will change drastically.

                  Also, Apple is reportedly going to make an iTunes app for Android, so their movies may soon be viewable on Android devices. It might be a big blow to UV. They better hurry up and get the CFF out there, or they are going to lose steam.

                    It's my understanding that you cannot start playing a movie that you've downloaded if the software cannot connect to the Vudu servers over the internet. I remember seeing people complain about that limitation. Has this been fixed?

                    We cannot really compare iTunes to CFF since CFF still doesn't exist. And, we cannot say iTunes is available on Andriod because it's not.

                      I believe that was a limitation only with PlayStation downloads. It definitely works with PC/Macs without any kind of internet connection, and it's hit-or-miss with portable devices. (There have been a few threads about iPads playing some content offline and then at some point requiring you to log in, which obviously can't be done offline.)

                        we have two iPads and both work for off-line viewing in the VUDU Player app. I use my iPad a lot for off-line viewing. My younger child is eight and for shopping or longer car trips, he entertains himself with watching a Vudu movie/TV show all the time. Cool thing is when we get back home, his save point transfers to the PS3 on the Plasma in the living room and he can keep watching whatever it was he was watching on the iPad while we were out of the house. It is really pretty slick.

                          Yes, this problem with signing in seems to occur when traveling; specifically it happened to me after I signed into wifi at a hotel, at which time I was able to watch movies, then put the iPad back in airplane mode, at which time it asked me to sign in. (And I was actually on an airplane at the time, one that didn't have wifi, so that was impossible. I had an 8-hour flight ahead of me during which I had hoped to watch some movies. )

                            That is good to know! I was thinking that they were requiring an internet connection to perform some kind of verification before they would start playing the movie.

                              Not sure if it's already mentioned, but you can merge UV libraries but you cannot merge iTunes libraries
