    I agree with rstone as indicated by my post right before his. I will concede, however, that from a PR and marketing standpoint, having to explain to would be customers why Vudu is lagging behind in the HD race can't be a good thing.

      You know redwein, I don't think vudu really needs to explain a thing. If you look at the battle now between DVD and Blu-ray, it is obvious from the lackluster sales of blu-ray that "Most" people just don't care that much about HD, and think DVD quality is good enough. While vudu might not appeal to a small niche market of HD users vs ATV due to its increasing lead of HD movies, what will make vudu successfull in the long run will be its appeal to the mass market, most of which don't care about the HD race, if you believe the sales figures, and will never upgrade to blu-ray or 1080p sets unless forced to.

        It's disappointing to me because back in December 2006 when those of us in the Alpha team first started getting specs on the product, one of the big things about the box was that it was being designed with HD VOD in mind.

        I do wish there was more HD content and for the life of me, I don't know why Apple has more than Vudu right now since my understanding of the studio VOD licensing terms is that it is a level playing field for all services. Look at rental times, release dates, etc - all the same. You'd think it would work for HD rentals. Not all studios are even releasing HD to Vudu yet.

        I will say that the SD quality on Vudu is phenomenal. So having something in HD isn't all that critical, IMHO. But Vudu is aiming at a higher end market and those people do demand HD so I hope the situation changes soon...

          This last part is sort of my point. The demographic of these devices I think are people who are into more cutting edge home theater experience- the same people who WOULD consider replacing their DVD players with Blu-Ray's. So I think most people trying to decide on one of these devices very much DOES care about HD content and that it will be a major deciding factor between devices. Look at the Roku netflix box- it's cheap but it has lousy content and no HD (yet anyway). But I don't think most people are going to buy both boxes and send the one they don't want back. IMHO this crowd wants their source HD- whether it be tv broadcasts, DVD's, or VOD. I will concede that for all I know the SD quality of Vudu is as good as or better than that of the ATV, I don't know I haven't seen it. But I would imagine that the vast majority of Vudu or ATV purchasers are connecting them to HDTV's, so just from a marketing position people are not going to feel comfortable buying a device who's claim is that it's SD is phenomenal.

          What's going to happen in 3 months? Let's say that ATV has 800 HD movies and (oh I don't know) 2,000 SD movies and Vudu has 300 HD movies and 6,000 SD movies. Again looking at this high end demographic what are they going to care about? It's an empirical question of course but IMHO that HD number is going to be something potential customers are staring a lot at.

          Let me just end by saying that I am not trying to rip Vudu or tick off Vudu owners in anyway. I think all these devices are incredibly novel and fantastic. I'm just trying to make some points about the marketing and strengths and weaknesses of the product. My apologies if this is offending some, it's not my intent.

              I don't think you are offending anyone and you do bring up some good points. Also, I agree that it is a marketing weakness to be behind on HD.

              That being said, I consider myself an early adopter of techonlogy in general and Vudu in particular (I bought 5 of them within the first month or so they were available). I don't think the delta between DVD (or SD Vudu) and HD is nearly as big as it is from standard 4:3 television and HD TV. While I can't live without HD TV these days, I really don't feel nearly as strongly about the HD in the movie arena.

              Like I said in my earlier post, an SD Vudu movie that has the aspect ratio of 16:9 and therefore fills the entire screen, is a more enjoyable experience for me than an HD movie that is much wider screen with bars on the top and the bottom. In the HD case, the picture shrinks enough that you aren't using 1080 lines anyway and I can't see it as well as the larger full screen movie.

                Not keeping the pace up with ATV on HD end is puzzling to me. I was pretty surprised when I found out (before this post) that ATV eclipsed Vudu by such a large margin -- exactly for the reasons mentioned by HeadShrinker.

                Perhaps, this is because content acquistion teams at Vudu and Apple have different strategies. ATV is focused on HD movies whereas Vudu on SD+HD (I'm pretty sure Vudu still leads in SD category save for TV).

                Speaking of TV, it'd be nice to see TV shows in HD?

                  No download service supports any of the advanced audio codecs. There is a satellite download service that is supposed to be launched later this year that will support DTS-MA audio and 80mbs bitrates(almost twice the BD bitrates).
                  I'll believe when I see it.

                  I just wish everything that is out now was out seven years ago when I first got into HD and was still watching alot of SD. Although I will admit my SD watching has gone up some since getting the VUDU, but like all SD content, whether from a VUDU, DVD or broadcast, it's very obvious to me when watching SD content.

                    Actually, the inclusion of 5.1 Audio for all of their SD and HD content is a significant strength of Vudu over ATV's. I'm not sure why Apple wouldn't just encode all of their stuff 5.1 except for the fact that they want to keep file size/download times small. In the end for me, since I was so focused on wanting to rent HD titles the 5.1 wasn't a no-go issue.

                    I notice, by the way, that Vudu has coincidentally removed the "HD" tab on their movies page...cue X-Files theme music please.

                      Actually, there's a lot of content in SD on Vudu that is in Stereo only. There is also HD content on Vudu that is in Stereo only as well. Vudu has infinitely more DD5.1 content in SD than ATV (since ATV has none), but it's not correct to say "all."

                      Probably because they see their biggest market for the SD content as an iPod, iPhone or Laptop/Desktop where 5.1 isn't an issue.

                      That was just a collection and not every single movie. Collections come and go all the time.

                        Yes, even HD content on Vudu could be Stereo, e.g. Wristcutters and Waiting... . What's disappointing is that SD version of Waiting has 5.1 sound.
