I think he's right and I hope Vudu can sway the studios into better deals ... every Tuesday that goes by and there are no new releases for rent is disheartening. Currently, content-wise it seems Vudu is on par with Comcast PPV ... and I don't think that's a good thing.

Re: What's New on VUDU October 30, 2007

I think the point is that EVERY movie should be available for rent and most would be happy. Are there some movies that it would be more economical to buy? Yes. If you have younger children or are really love a given movie. Otherwise I want the option to rent EVERYTHING. As a matter of fact, if the choice was universally to rent or buy exclusively. I think everyone would give up the ability to buy on VUDU.

As a matter of fact, maybe that would be a better model. I would love it if the only downside of the VUDU box was that you could NOT buy it and hence had to keep renting it on VUDU or buy the dvd. Maybe VUDU users would have rent movies more than once and actually generate more overall revenue for the studios.

Think about it. If this box can truly deliver every release on tuesdays for rent it could really blow away the alternatives. IMHO. No more envelopes, que, trips to video store, no out of stock or "long wait" messages....

Hmm I would buy that box...actually I did! That is what I bought VUDU to be and am still hoping that it ultimately gets there. We need to be cautious but optimistic when talking it up with our friends. You just got to believe...

In an ideal world every title would have a rental option and a purchase option. The reality is not so - the various studios are experimenting with variations to see what "sticks". There may always be titles that choose to limit your options - not Vudu's choice - but the simple fact of life. Your votes (as in where you spend your dollars) are being counted, and hopefully will be able to get the studios to do right by the consumer.

I have high hopes for VUDU. The picture is great and generally, the experience is pretty positive. But the lack of new releases for rent and overall selection is a problem. Not a killer yet, but if not addressed soon, could be.

Right now, I would not recommend to my friends - yet. The price is way too high for the service (a DirecTV HD receiver is $299), plus the rental selection is an issue. BUT! I do have high hopes this concept. It's a good one.

I do hope VUDU is adequately capitalized for the long haul.

Have the studios ever done right by the consumer? Don't hang your hat on that happening.

I think it's safe to say that those of us who have been testing this box and working with it for the long haul agree with what you guys are saying...

Now to hope the studios agree, too ... and soon! Seems for every 'buy' customer there are 'insert number here' customers that are ready (with their pocketbooks) to rent. So how much $ does a 'buy' net the studio vs. how many rentals are needed to break even? The above is not just limited to Vudu. To keep it interesting, let's try to subtract sales to 'rental service facilities', too. Any thoughts or ideas? Inquiring minds want to know!

First post here, although I have been browsing the forums for awhile now. Just got my VUDU box today and I have to agree that all movies should have the option of rental or purchase. Just my quick two cents...

It's been 2 weeks since the last "Whats New" post by Vudu, so any new movies on the horizon?

Version 1.0.2 of the software has a "coming soon" button. You should be able to see what's coming up there. I think it even gives dates...

Keep in mind, I'm not saying that this shouldn't be posted, but it is available on the box itself now. This is a great example of a customer driven feature addition. You guys asked for it and it was delivered...

I saw the coming soon section, but I don't remember if it provides dates for purchase and then rent. If it does - that's great, since Vudu knows exactly when they can release for purchase and rental as dictated by the studios. If they provide no dates (particularly for rent availability) then that will be dissapointing ...

It should provide dates for some of the movies. I don't think it has all the dates in there yet, but I have seen some where it says, "Available to own on such and such a date. Available to rent on another date..."

There is no availability information for any of the movies listed under the coming soon section. It would be a nice addition to show the buy and rental availability dates.

It stikes me that this is a chicken and egg problem.

Egg: Vudu has to prove its concept before the studios are willing to provide it with all of the content that its other retail outlets get on the same schedule ...

Chicken: Until Vudu can do that, the studios are clearly limiting and restricting the content availability and options (I presume that Vudu is not curtailing customer options regarding whether to rent or buy).

Clearly there is market demand for VOD new releases on the same timetable as Best Buy/Netflix.

Will the studios step up to meet that demand?

I'm guessing they make more money off of Vudu rentals than they do from Netflix viewings, so why not?

                                Vudu is not curtailing anything.

A great deal of the issue is that the studios have rather complex business models that create these issues. As I'm not all that well versed in this, I'm not going to conjecture further, but from what I have read and understand, the studios are very protective of content and license rights. Why they have different models for DVD or physical media as opposed to digital distribution (all digital distribution providers have the same limitations as Vudu), I have no idea. Digital distribution is still rather new and the studios tend to fight new business models and technologies. Again, their whole structure is not about content distribution but about rights management. It's flawed for sure. Remember, they fought the idea of VCRs, rentals, etc. In time, they saw the value proposition for each of these and accepted and embraced the new technologies. Same goes for digital distribution as well. It's the wave of the future and really that "killer app" that everyone has been looking for with regard to the net...
