FandangoNow Goes MA March 13th -AND- is Dropping UV Status from ALL Their MA Titles!

FandangoNow is launching Movies Anywhere support this Tuesday, March 13th. With that, it also looks like they are dropping UV status from ALL of their MA eligible titles at the same time! After seeing reports about this on social media, I contacted FandangoNow and they 'seem' to have confirmed this...

FandangoNow: "Hello and thank you for reaching out. In regards to your inquiry, yes, Movies Anywhere will become the primary digital locker service for FandangoNOW. Titles that are currently UV will now be Movies Anywhere and have that logo. This will occur with specific studios while there are others that are still UV, but your UV libraries should not be affected."

I asked some follow-up questions for clarification that I'm still waiting on a reply to, but it doesn't look good.

This is horrible news for those of us that still prefer UV over MA. In large part because of grandfathered sharing accounts, but also for those who don't use MA much or at all. Definitely one more nail in UV's coffin. Looks like a strong-arm tactic and quite frankly, doesn't even seem entirely legal despite all of the ridiculously wide-open and convoluted TOSs in the licence based streaming industry.

In any case, if you are a UV person you had better take care of any FandangoNow/Vudu/UV porting issues you might still have, now! And if you are a UV 4K person, you had better get those UHD UV redeems that only work at FandangoNow, redeemed ASAP!

Also, a lot of people are worried about their UV libraries losing movies or a plethora of other potential problems, after the many issues with Vudu's MA launch. I'm still waiting on a support ticket with Vudu from TONS of movies that are still completely missing from my own myUV acccount!

    Updates...

Update 1: List of bugs discovered so far: (From linking FandangoNow with Movies Anywhere.)
    1. Any titles that you already have in Movies Anywhere in a lower definition than you have at FandangoNow, will automatically downgrade your FandangoNow copy to the lower quality dictated by Movies Anywhere. They should still show in the proper definition at myUV.com, though. This doesn't seem to be happening to everyone right away. In some cases it can take a while before the porting bug presents itself. Typical examples...
      • Any UV UHD codes that redeemed UHD at FN because they are only HD at Vudu where Vudu then ported them to MA as HD. Like 'Apollo 13'.
      • Any UV codes redeemed or purchases made at FN that are HD at FN but only SD at Vudu where Vudu then ported them to MA as SD. Like 'Dark City (Directors Cut)'.
    2. All TV seasons that are UV at FandangoNow have lost their UV logos. FandangoNow has told me that all of those seasons are still in fact UV but I'm still waiting on a confirmation if they still continue to port in both directions. So unless you already have a show that is porting or have a list of shows that were UV at FN prior to this, there's no way to know which are UV now.

Update 2: Relevant customer service replies from FandangoNow:
We have some information to provide that we hope answers your questions about how UV is affected.
    1. All UV movies from a studio participating in Movies Anywhere ( Fox, Sony, Universal, WB, Disney ) will no longer be eligible for UV. If one of these movies are purchased, the title will no longer flow into your UV locker.
    2. All UV titles that have already been purchased will continue to be in your UV locker.
    3. Your UV locker will still continue to be pulled into FandangoNOW on a linked account. Any purchase from a different retailer, will continue to flow to FandangoNOW as long as it is in your UV locker.
    4. UV Movies from studios that are not participating in MA will continue to be a UV title.
Hi. Got some information in regards to your inquiry on the UV code redemption. If the title is labeled with the MA logo, it will not port to UV. If you are linked to MA, it will port to MA, but if you are not linked to MA, then it will only be available to view in your FandangoNOW library.
TV shows that are UV, no matter if they are from a studio that is participating in MA or not, will continue to be a UV title. It may not have the UV logo on our site, but double check it in your UV locker because they should still be there. That is in regards to tv shows that have already been purchased and are in your UV locker.

    RIP UV...

I would recommend everyone update a spreadsheet with their purchased titles or at the very least screen shot their libraries. Not too worried though because if UV goes under the studios will have to transfer the rights to MA.

Have to? Should... but I think we're learning more and more now that they do whatever they want sadly. There are still a few Studios that are UV and not MA and of course no TV shows are MM yet. If the last nail in the coffin for UV comes before TV or those Studios get on board... Well...

Definitely a very good idea to inventory as much as you can from every service provider. Unfortunately the burden falls on us.

Nobody should lose any movies. The ones you bought from FandangoNow will just switch from UV to MA. Non MA studio's should stay in your library. You will just have one more place to watch your MA movies. The ones you bought from other providers will stay UV.

But that raises so many worrisome questions...

          1. Will our UV movies that we got from FandangoNow (that are MA eligible), lose UV status at FandangoNow? If so...
          • How can they even take away UV status if that's what you bought?
          • Will they still remain UV at myUV.com?

          2. Will our UV movies that port into FandangoNow (that are MA eligible) from myUV.com, lose UV status at FandangoNow? If so...
          • How can they even take away UV status if that's what you bought regardless of where from?
          • Will they still remain UV at myUV.com?
          • Will they port from FandangoNow to MA?

          3. Will ALL UV movies at FandangoNow (that are MA eligible), lose UV status at FandangoNow? If so...
          • Will those movies now no longer transfer to myUV.com if we purchase them at FandangoNow?
          • Will UV titles that we purchase elsewhere (that are MA eligible at FandangoNow), no longer port into FandangoNow via myUV.com?

You should ask Fandango, VUDU can't answer those questions. When TalkTalk (UV provider in the UK) left UV, anything that was not purchased through TalkTalk (but just accessible due to UV) disappeared from user libraries.

Anything UV in your UV locker will stay in your UV locker, but support depends on what level Fandango wants to give it.

If Fandango doesn't offer UV rights with future purchases, and just offers MA rights, then it'll be like Apple, Google, and Amazon.

Basically, a locker is only as robust as the storefronts that support it. And since UV no longer supports sharing, and MA supports multiple streams AND all the major storefronts, it's obvious where the future is headed.

I have. I'm waiting for them to reply. I was making a point in reply to the previous response.

UV used to support sharing AND multiple streams AND had tons of storefronts AND had more studios onboard AND TV AND more consumer freedom with account management. It seemed obvious where the future was heading then but that clearly did little to ensure its longevity as they slowly stripped features.

MA -seems- like it -might- have a more stable future so far but as far as features go, despite a couple positives over UV, it's still subpar comparatively. And as far as consumer confidence goes, I have very little at this point.

So many issues involving MA right now, it's not the best time to be launching on yet another platform. I'm all for it, with connecting all accounts, making sure all our MA titles are shared, makes it easier, but it's going to bring up more issues with titles and MA, just watch.

The question I want to know is if we own a title in SD on Vudu and it's SD in our UV and MA library, but want to upgrade it, and FN is the only place with the HD encode, would purchasing it there upgrade it in our MA library, so when Vudu gets the HD encode, it will be HDX here?

I agree, and I've told their customer support that they never should have launched MA without 4k support.

                        94 UHD
                        859 HDX

MA supports 4k/HDR the same as UV does. It passes the entitlement. MA just doesn't offer playback in 4k/HDR on the MoviesAnywhere site (and playback is something that UV never offered). The studios will come in time.

As for TV, well UV hasn't been great about that either.

I've got two TV episodes that I own (Arrow/Flash) that VUDU has listed twice. Exact same content, but if I want to have the convenience of straight playback, VUDU wants me to purchase them a second time. There's been an open thread about it here in the forum for over a month, and it's gotten ignored by all of the VUDU folk who post here. No one will even say if it is intentional, or confirm that it is a bug.

They'll have to eventually. Just a matter of time.

MA does support UHD entitlements, same as UV.

Ugh, that was one of the things I hated about UV. Being told I need to go elsewhere to play content.

With MA anything in my library is playable everywhere that is linked to MA. With UV I can "view" my library anywhere that was linked to UV, but it is a crapshoot if it would actually play, or if I needed to be redirected to another UV storefront.

And UV.com can't play anything, so MA.com is already a step up. Plus, MA.com includes extras, which UV.com doesn't.
