Re: Chromecast Ultra with 4k / HDR / Dolby Vision support !!

Having watched 2 UHD titles over the weekend via CC Ultra, I'm happy with my settings to view as a work around.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 looked great.
Fantastic Beasts has a rather questionable grade and look in places with excessive burnt-out bright spots (hence my initial apprehension, it's a shame I tried judging my settings using this movie).

I'm happy, and would suggest if you can adjust your TV, give it a try.

Both the current Shield app and Sony app are actually "native" (non Android TV) apps (same with Roku). NVidia implemented UHD on their platform, Sony did not.

so why not port the same app over to Sony TVs or other Android TV boxes if that's the case?
Hmm, that would be a good idea... as I said, please be patient

Question for you Jake: Why is it that the native VUDU app in LG OLEDs, and some streaming boxes like 4K Roku's can stream our UHD purchases, but my Sony A1E OLED Android TV only tops off at HDX? When will this be addressed and fixed, since that is VUDU's own app limitation. And what's odd is, I read people say the NVIDIA Shield can stream UHD, and that's Android TV, so why not port the same app over to Sony TVs or other Android TV boxes if that's the case?

I guess all any of us are asking for is a little more transparency. I for one appreciate communication, but on this particular issue I'm still in the dark.
If you are talking about the Chromecast issue, there isn't any change from my last comment: it's a CC firmware bug, Google is aware of it and hopefully will fix it in a future update. I posted detailed information about exactly what the problem is earlier on this topic. So, this is probably my last post on this topic until it's fixed, it as unfortunately there is nothing more for VUDU to do...

AFAIK there aren't many other similar companies that provide as much direct interaction with customers as Vudu. We often can't provide detailed information on unreleased features in public forums, but that doesn't mean they are ignored or not in development.

Really, your enthusiasm is understood and appreciated! But remember, there are real people here who love what we do and want to provide as many features to customers as possible - so insults are not appreciated, and will make it far less likely you will get a response on this forum in the future...

As to the specific issues/questions from this topic - please be patient! There are some great new updates and features coming very soon and we will talk about them as soon as we can.

    Thanks,
    -Jake
I appreciate your reply, especially the last two sentences, which had they been written earlier in the thread, would have saved myself and others further frustration. I actually love most of the Vudu service, but it often feels comments written in the forum are a waste of time. So I do thank you for what you wrote and hope to see more of it in the future.

With regards to new features that's fantastic, but often with software development, things that used to work sometimes break, and it seems like there's no rush to fix them because effort is now being spent on new ideas.

No wonder 4K movies aren't adopting as fast-- Too many cooks in the kitchen and no one wants to work together.

    I'm also using
    Cast firmware version: 1.26.92486

I've had limited success manually adjusting my TV settings, the best so far being:
HDMI EOTF Type : Traditional Gamma
    HDMI Colorimetry Type: Rec. 709
    HDMI Range: Normal (not full)
    HDMI YCbCr Range: Normal
    HDMI HDR: Off

Anything else and my picture is way too over saturated (Rec 2020). Or completely burnt out (ST. 2084).
However I'm not entirely satisfied with the above setup, I think whites are slightly muted and colour looks a little washed out, but at least we're no longer seeing Oompa Loompa skin tones.

I used to like it when the picture just worked out the box with everything set to auto, but between Vudu app and CC Ultra firmware this is no longer possible.

I'm not confident so I don't want to view half baked movies, so still waiting for someone to find a fix....

The CCU player is incorrectly signaling the TV that the content is HDR10 when it is not - the color/brightness issue seen is because the actual colorspace is (SDR) Rec.709 (or Dolby Vision), but the TV is being told it is (HDR10) BT.2020 / ST2086. It's likely a bug in handling "Dolby Vision Profile 4" streams (a format that has both SDR/Main10 and Dolby Vision embedded in a compatible way).

We are working with Google to get it fixed, but I assume it will require a firmware update.
This is what I tried telling @madebygoogle since Roku and Nvidia Shield don't have this issue.

    Banging head against brick wall...

Thanks for this information, Jake. This answers a longstanding question I have had about the SDR/DoVi implementation VUDU is using for the UHD tier.

Do you know/can you say if the DoVi stream will remain Profile 4 following the introduction of HDR-10?

You may PM if considered OT.

No, but I'm using the Nvidia Shield and not the Chromecast with the Oppo. I just played one of these samples:

    64 UHD
    795 HDX
    2 SD
