The movie Role Models (Unrated), the subtitles/closed captionining timing is off. It is delayed when watching. Can this please be fixed?

Oh, so this happens for many movies? I didn't realize it. It it too many to list?

I watch a lot of Vudu with captions and they’re constantly off. Sometime better than others. Not sure exactly why.

          Hi,

          How delayed is it?

There are 2 different problems that I've seen.

The first is that subtitles can lag a little behind the sound (or even show up early), usually not by more than a second or so, but even that much is still very disturbing. This seems to have been improved a few years back and works better than it used to in general (a "thank you!" to the Vudu staff for that).

Unfortunately, some series (or specific episodes of series) and some movies are still not as well-synch'd as others. The first time I noticed a problem was a few years back with the very first (pilot) episode of "X Files" where the subtitles were lagging noticeable behind the sound. More recently I noticed that some of the earlier episodes of the original Star Trek (remastered) series still have this problem.

I'm not sure how subtitle synchronization vs. sound is implemented, but because it appears to sometimes differ series-by-series/episode-by-episode or movie-by-movie, it may potentially need to be fixed separately for each individual title. I require subtitles because I often miss words here and there, but because I also can hear, any problems with synchronization are very disturbing.

The second problem I've seen somewhat rarely and yet more than once is that some subtitles are completely wrong, totally disconnected from the sound, not just slightly delayed or early, such as subtitles showing up over the credits from dialog that happens minutes later. I've seen this problem in a few episodes of some shows and ended up having to temporarily turn the subtitles off while watching those. That made those episodes VERY hard to watch because I miss words here and there (plus I sometimes watch with a family member who can barely hear at all and so absolutely requires subtitles or totally misses out). This one is definitely on a case-by-case basis. Some of those may have been fixed since I last tried watching them; I'd have to remember which episodes and go back and try them again. I do remember at least one of them was an episode of the original/1970's Wonder Woman series (but I'd have to go back and try to figure out which specific episode).

As I mentioned, I think the developers made some significant improvements a few years ago and I haven't seen nearly as many problems since then. I think the last time I saw the more noticeable lag was not long ago with some of the earlier episodes of the original Star Trek (remastered) series. Since I'm a huge Star Trek fan, this one is particularly important to me and so I hope it has since been fixed or gets fixed soon.

In case this is partially related to the device being used, I should note that I use a Roku.

In regards to your question about if there are too many to list, part of the issue with listing them all is in the problem being anywhere from very mild to very noticeable, and every so often very severe. The titles with the problem being more in the direction of very mild are very common (and so would be a long list) and those with it being more severe are less common (so would be a much shorter list). I've only seen it completely wrong (by minutes) on something like 3-5 titles.

I hope this helps clarify the situation - thanks

Everybody Loves Raymond, all of season 1 and so far the first couple episodes of Season 2, are unwatchable with captions on. Literally up to minutes out of sync. The season 2 episode we were watching last night it was minutes ahead of what was being spoken. Tried watching and keeping sound low yet had to simply shut it off as the out of sync was so bad.

Main setup is Roku Ultra 2020 with latest updates to both Roku and VUDU app. Appears same when using any other means to watch it as well. Android app, Laptop, etc. Definitely an encode problem.
