    Actually, this is by design at this point. Vudu is still in the process of developing the talent pool necessary to run a successful retail marketing program. If you look on the jobs section of the Vudu website they are looking for people that would handle some of the retail infrastructure requirements a company has. It is my understanding that both the big retail chains and Vudu are interested in having them carry the product. The point is that right now Vudu doesn't have the infrastructure in place to support that market.

    Vudu's initial target market was higher end first adopters. Then the plan is to gradually move into other distribution methods as the infrastructure grows. Right now Vudu is available from retailers such as Tweeter and Magnolia stores that are not yet inside of Best Buy (I believe Magnolia is owned by BestBuy and so they do have the relationship with Best Buy now).

    As one of the early product testers, I've been working with people from Vudu for almost a year now and everything they do appears to be very well thought out and calculated. They want to be sure they can crawl before walking and walking before running. The worst thing a company can do is introduce a product to mass retail and not have the infrastructure to support it.

    A lot of successful products are never mass marketed. The Logitech Squeezebox is one example. Logitech bought SlimDevices who developed the Squeezebox and made it successful in a very niche market. Logitech is a good company who would never have purchased SlimDevices had they not been a company with a good track record and a good product. And the Squeezebox is still being marketed the way it was before Logitech bought SilmDevices - it is still not mass marketed in the big retail chains.

    Yet, there are mass marketed products that while they sell hundreds of thousands or millions, still don't turn a profit for the company that is selling them. Examples of this are companies like TiVo or XM and Sirius. All of these companies have yet to turn a profit and actually make money.

    So selling a product in a mass retailer does not guarantee success and not starting out with selling a product there does not guarantee failure...
