    vudu pricing vs Amazon Unbox

    I rented two movies this weekend for 99 cents and 1.99. The Waitress was for rent for 99 and Live Free Die Hard was for 1.99. On Vudu they were both renting for 3.99. For those prices I would certainly rent from Amazon Unbox then Vudu any day. If other companies can offer the same moves for rent and cheaper I will skip the Vudu rentals.

    It will be interesting to see what value users put on the convenience of instant viewing, versus having to wait for a download. What was the lag/download time before viewing? I've also heard that the Unbox downloads are never in 5.1 sound.

      I have found that there is a chasm between what people say and what they do with regards to this convenience/waiting issue. My wife always says it is silly to pay the premium for instant watching, but probably 3 times out of 5 she will pay the extra to watch on Vudu.

        Also, the only time I ever watch movies on a computer screen is when I go on a business trip, so to me Amazon Unbox is useless, since I don't have a TiVo.

        Actually, even if I did, can you browse and buy movies from your TV with Unbox? I think someone answered about that, but I forget.

          It takes a few hours to download the movie but I rent the movie the night before or before I go to work in the morning.

            You can buy movies and store them on Amazon's database.

              Kinda reminds me of my beta testing days with the Vudu when I had the 1.5 Mb/sec downlink. It's WAY, WAY better to have instant viewability...

                I have both and I don't use Amazon Unbox at all. As good as the Tivo interface is, The Amazon Unbox on Tivo isn't. At least as of now, I will pick Vudu any day. Of course, I could imagine Amazon Unbox improving and would consider it more seriously if it did.

                  This is one of my fears for Vudu. For everyone who is currently enjoying instant download on a marginal connection, and patiently waiting for and demanding HD, I'm concerned they will be disappointed if they lose their instant download capability for HD.

                    HD file sizes are approximately double the size of SD movies.

                    I'll leave it to you guys to figure out the bandwidth needed to stream instantly!

                      That's obviously an easy calculation. The thing that isn't easy is knowing how many current customers are having instant viewing (and loving it) but are using more than half of their bandwidth to do so. Those are the people that I am worried about becoming dissatisfied.

                        Well, agreed. However, we are living in a day and age where bandwidth and upgradeability of said bandwidth is fairly cheap. For cable modem and Fios customers getting 4 Mb/sec worth of bandwidth is absolutely a no brainer. Yes, it might cost another $10 a month or so, but bandwidth is something you'll always use.

                        I'm more concerned about the DSL customers. Most DSL services give you up to about 3 Mb/sec to a distance of about 10,000 feet from the CO. To get 6 Mb/sec on DSL, you need to be within something like 6000 feet I believe. And I don't know if all DSL operators offer up to 6 Mb/sec anyhow.

                        Still, the driving factor is bandwidth. If you want to use the Vudu, you will end up buying the bandwidth. It's what I did. After 9 months of beta testing with a 1.5 Mb/sec line that was unstable, I'd had enough and I knew HD streaming was going to make matters worse!

                          Huh? I meant, is it something you can do through the TiVo using the remote? I had some friends over yesterday and they loved the interface, and how you can browse movies and previews, rent or buy one, then watch it right away, all on the TV and using the same remote.

                            On my Series 2 Dual-Tuner model, TiVo's download interface (Unbox, Podcasts, etc) is painfully slow. The search interface was also pretty poor last time I looked at it. It was so bad that I never even used my free credits (people who signed up early for Unbox on Tivo were given something like $20 to spend on the service).

                              I'm curious how you did that when on their website it clearly says you can only rent Live Free or Die hard for $3.99. Same thing for waitress... says $3.99 for rental... strange...
