I hope they announce something like this at CES. It would be nice to have more HD movies than the Bourne ones...

With bandwidth being what it is right now, I don't think it's reasonable to expect Blu-Ray/HD-DVD level of picture and sound quality. However, I think it's reasonable to ask for HD content and DD 5.1 sound. Vudu understands that. And people on this forum generally understand that Vudu is being held back by licensing issues although there are different opinions with regard to the time period in which Vudu has to build up the library in order to have a successful product.

There's no question that Blu-Ray or HD-DVD is probably going to have more audio choices available than Vudu. Sure, the discs support DD7.1, and many of the various DTS formats, etc.

Vudu supports DD5.1. It also supports streaming of about 5000 movies to you without putting a single DVD into a player. You don't have to keep a library of physical media with Vudu. Yes, Blu-Ray or HD-DVD may offer better picture quality. Most consumers don't have the bandwidth to support the streaming of files that are 20 GB in size and storage also becomes a huge issue at that point.

The bottom line is that, yeah, there's a price for the convenience and flexibility of Vudu. And there is a price for the better sound and potentially better picture on physical media. Which price do you want to pay?

I don't own a high-def DVD player yet. Even though I have a Vudu, I still anticipate eventually buying a Hi-Def DVD player. Why? Well, because there might be some movies I want to buy where the "price" of the better picture and sound are worth it to me (say a movie series like LOTR). But for the vast majority of movies, the convenience and easr of use of the Vudu is going to be far more sufficient.

It's all in what you as a consumer want and desire...

Can you please stop assuming the rest of us know all your acronyms? What is BR? What is MA?

The box supports Dolby Digital 5.1. That is all the present hardware supports at this time.

Keep this up and we're going to have to start including one of these with each Vudu box shipped.

What is your beef with DD5.1? It's what most broadcast HD stuff uses.

I was discussing video quality, but you are correct that HDM offers superior audio codec support. But first things first -- lets push Vudu to release all new content in DD 5.1 instead of stereo.

How is audio not as good? Because it is 5.1 as opposed to 7.1?

I completely agree. With a good transfer encoded at the right bit rate and compression, even 480p can look as well as (if not better) than so-called HD content that was poorly encoded (such as initial release of "Fifth Element" on BluRay).

If you want to read up on process on film transfer process, Sound & Vision has a very interesting article about WB's operations -- http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/fea...d-is-made.html

AVS thread about the article is here -- http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=951385

P.S. With regard to movie sizes, from what I remember seeing on Xbox Live and Usenet, most HD movies converted to HD WMV or H.264 are 5-7 gigs for 720p and 8-10 for 1080p.
