The Demise of iTunes/Apple in the Digital Copy Market:

    Jeff Kleist - Technology Tell

    http://www.technologytell.com/homete...digital-early/

P.S.- I am still waiting for someone to provide me a title that has a release date past today (6/11/13) and is bundled with an iTunes exclusive digital copy.

The absence of such a product can only spell the abject failure of Apple in this market space considering just around the bend of history, a mere 18 months ago, it seemed iTunes was a defacto prerequisite for redeeming a digital copy.

The birds have clearly flown from the iTunes coupe.

I'm afraid you'll have to wait a bit longer as there are no titles, currently, which have been released past today's date. Not unless you have the capability to go into the future ad come back that is. Now where is that Delorean when you need it.

... but even then the digital copies weren't iTunes exclusive since they also come with a PC variant.

The PC version was silly. A nod to a by-gone era.

...but this thread was meant as a standing challenge, silly. I figure as the weeks go by, folks will look back on this date as when the digital copy market changed forever.

No thank you. Anyone else out there able to stream my movie industry library? Oh, Vudu

Re: The Demise of iTunes/Apple in the Digital Copy Market:

                according to Thomas K. Arnold at Home Media Magazine in the below article, the breakdown is like this;

                STUDIO NAME DIGITAL COPY METHOD
                Disney Studios DigitalCopy+
                Sony Pictures UltraViolet Only
                Warner Brothers Ultraviolet Only
                20th Century Fox Ultraviolet Only
                Paramount Ultraviolet & iTunes
                Lionsgate Ultraviolet & iTunes
                Universal Ultraviolet & iTunes
                http://www.homemediamagazine.com/dis...copy-web-30588

...none of the Major studios are iTunes exclusive starting yesterday (June 11th, `13).

This is a dramatic change in the digital copy market.

The studios wanted to cut iTunes out by backing Ultraviolet and they have done just that. This is a major reversal. There are no major studios offering iTunes exclusive digital copy redemptions as of sunrise yesterday morning.

Me too. If I was going to be forced into getting my movies via iTunes/AppleTV it would of been like having to sign a life long contract to buy Apple, Corp. products until my dying breath.

I considered it for about 1.5 seconds and just couldn't bring myself to do something so colossally stupid.

I was so happy to have found Vudu/UltraViolet as an alternative to that madness.

Until Disney gets on the Vudu bandwagon, I will have to keep using iTunes for my poor quality SD digital copies that came free in some disney movies but not all shows. I can't see spending $23 for a streaming copy of a movie I already own on Blu-ray and DVD (cause it came packaged that way). Maybe one day they can all get along and put a Vudu app on the apple tv and maybe put an itunes app on some set top boxes to allow us to use 1 device instead of many to view our libraries. Better yet, get all the Disney stuff into the D2D world of UV/Vudu and then we can all be happy.

as something to hang your hopes on, perhaps now that iTunes in the Cloud is a reality, they are working at adopting DECE membership. How cool would it be to view your UV Locker titles on AppleTV?

I personally think they see the writing on the wall and will be working to adopt UV compliance instead of letting themselves be cutout of an emerging market altogether.

Now that the industry has coalesced onto a new standard, they will be having some tough decisions to make. I would be very surprised if they are not already looking at adding UV compliance to iTunes. Amazon too.

As you suggest, hoping for Disney Studios to become DECE members is another path.

I, like you, am absolutely opposed to paying full EST price for a title I already own in another form. I do not mind the D2D nominal fee, but no way would I ever pay full EST price.

Well said! Having all my iTunes content become UV enabled and vice versa is definitely a dream! I think once Disney goes UV, that may be the last nail in the coffin for the walled garden. Similar to Warner going strictly with Blu-ray being the last nail in the coffin for HD-DVD.

When OSX Mavericks comes out, you will be able to watch your Vudu movies on your iTV, because you can use your iTV as a second screen and watch it via web browser.

One of the smaller studios, Starz/Anchor Bay, releases digital copies in both UV and iTunes format.

I noticed Fox's Killing Lincoln, which was released yesterday, only included a UV version; no iTunes.
