And they will exist side by side for a while.
Not going to happen. They will add other providers, hopefully Vudu, and integrate them into Disney Movies anywhere (DMA). DMA will coexist with UV and function like UV, but with a different central repository that is under Disney's control.
Wouldn't that be awesome, all your Disney iTunes digital copies being imported into Vudu?

See below. He is not alone. This is why Disney does not need to join UV, but Vudu needs to Disney Movies Anywhere.

But good news, sort of, if you call up Disney Movies anywhere and ask nicely that they unlock Frozen in your DMA account after providing them the Disney Magic Code from the disc Vudu send you in the mail as part of the pre-order, then "Get A horse" will show up in your DMA locker.

Also, for what it's worth, I think "Get a horse!" is on the actual Blu-ray, but it's pretty crappy that Vudu doesn't just give it to everyone who owns Digital Copy of Frozen like DMA does. I've been SUPER impressed with DMA so far despite having a UV library of 300+ titles, I'm literally just purchased 30+ Disney movies because the DMA experience is so customer-friendly.

Disney Studios will join DECE. It will just take awhile longer for them to get religion.
Xbox 360 *never* had a Blu-ray player, even after HD DVD died.

UV vs. DMA is not a format war. Disney will stick with DMA; the other studios will stick with UV. All the retailers, including both Vudu and iTunes, will someday link to both DMA for Disney titles and UV for everyone else. Period. No format war.

            Pretty much this.

It's important to remember, the Xbox One likely only has a blu-ray player for the sake of convenience to developers, as they only need to press one type of disc, as opposed to pressing DVDs for Microsoft and BDs for Sony. Also, the Xbox One is Microsoft's attempt to completely control the living room, and you can't do that these days without a blu-ray player.

Disney has it's own content, and has a bit more leverage to make it's own rules. As much as I hate to say it, UV needs Disney, but not the other way around. I think the best we can hope for is that they allow Vudu, and all other streaming providers, access to the system to pull licenses. They eventually got around to allowing most providers to redeem DC+, so I don't see a reason they won't do it for DMA.

Why? What do they have to gain?

To go UV they more or less would have to abandon iTunes and this is not going to happen.

They will get Vudu and maybe others to join DMA, come out with an Android app, maybe a smart TV app and they will effectively bypass the need to join UV.

And don't forget that huge card they have in their back pocket to play when needed - Star Wars.

Re: Disney's Frozen - Digital HD - Not Ultraviolet

I imagine Disney will put the onus on the providers to meet some standards before they allow participation. The current interface is so well-integrated with iTunes it appears seamless after the initial link. In fact, once the account is linked you can watch your content in any supported web browser without even opening or logging in to iTunes. To purchase content you must go to an external page on iTunes, but aside from that it apperas Apple-free. I expect other providers will be required to have equally seamless interfaces. That being said, I think you won't see your Disney movies in your UV account, regardless how much we want it to happen.

I think you are right, that Disney will not join UV anytime soon, if ever. The only problem I see with Disney, is they only have around 400 titles available for DMA. They cannot survive on only those movies. They will have to start getting more titles out.

The important thing to remember for Disney is their business model. Their business model has always involved releasing a few quality movies and making as much money off of the as possible. They keep releasing Limited Editions and then quickly place them back into the vault to be sealed. That is until they want to make some more money off the movie. This si the same basic philosophy for their Digital collection.

The only difference, is the cpies are not limited in time, but rather users. In this case, if they do not join UV, they can keep their library of 400 movies. Why? They make every user that wants a digital copy, to have to buy directly from them. Meaning, anyone who links to your account, will not have access to it. Instead, if they want to see it, they too have to buy the digital copy.

This truly is greedy, but fits their philosophy from the beginning. I, for one, will not be purchasing any Disney Movies for the foreseeable future. I personally cannot stand their business model and in no way want to support their business decisions. Sadly, I alone will not make a difference. Hopefully, as the Ultraviolet trend continues to grow, more and more consumers will get tired of Disney's act - forcing them to change.

"Maleficent" I predict, will be Disney Studios first UV digital release.

This will be this holiday season.

By that time, the writing will be on the wall and they will have no economic reason to continue to play the "bad cop" in this ongoing saga.

The studio is a public company who need answer to their stock holders.

iTunes as a brand is eroding quickly. The number of articles being published indicating that their inertia is soon to come to an abrupt halt are all over.

To suggest it is just a whim of mine is not grounded in reality.

A recent blow is Amazon Prime offering their members a library of 1 million songs for free for streaming or download.

Beats Music, Pandora, Spotify, and now Amazon are very real market share threats to their bread and butter music service.

For in home playback of MPAA content onto a TV, iTunes requires the purchase of a propitiatory set top box. This has hampered their ability to gain market penetration for in home TV playback. That space is owned by the streaming providers, of which UV is an important part of the mix.

If you believe otherwise, it is you who is dreaming that iTunes will remain forever a dominant force. Pls find an article published in the last six months that supports your claim. I can easily respond with a few dozen to support mine.

Your argument, if it is to be believed, suggests that Disney will need to look beyond iTunes for other DMA partners and Vudu seems to be one of the stronger options.

                                Close.

With Target, Best Buy, etc. running UV store fronts...

                                and

                                back end UV features...

                                and

increasing acceptance and end user satisfaction...

I believe Disney Studios will soon no longer able to turn their back to digital distribution via DECE, as all other studios are doing.

As an educated guess, I am suggesting "Maleficent" will be the first.
