Re: Disney's Frozen - Digital HD - Not Ultraviolet

I'd like to see a few of these articles suggesting iTunes is losing Market Share to any UV providers. Maybe Amazon or Google Play, but those are not UV enabled. Of course, I hope they will join soon, but there is no indication that they will. Send me some of the links in a PM, because posting them here will get the thread closed. Wouldn't it be nice if we could have an open discussion?

NPD Group study is a very recent one.

That one study alone generated about a dozen articles in recent months.

I've seen you post this a number of times. Do you have any evidence to back this up?

          ...none.

Just individual speculation based on watching digital home media trends.

I have several google news alerts which trigger to keep me informed of any hints, but as of yet there is no evidence that I know of.

...and to be clear, I never indicated that UV is taking over market share from iTunes.

I said, and I believe it is very common knowledge, that iTunes is bleeding market share in the music industry to streaming providers. Amazon making 1 million songs free to download and stream being a very recent blow to continue the trend at brand erosion.

The UV in home viewing trend is not really a direct competitor to iTunes as iTunes playback of MPAA content onto a TV requires a retrofit via their propitiatory set top box. That is something they do, but not a market they have held much ground in compared to the Netflix/Prime/Hulu+ crew.

UV is a new component to that streaming product mix and is comprised of several companies operating UV enabled on-line store fronts.

Just as iTunes is bleeding market share to music streaming providers, they stand in the same stance with the streaming of content onto home TVs, a trend which by any measure is gaining consumer acceptance in no small degree.

Exactly. iTunes music, and perhaps video sales are losing some market share to subscription services. It's cheaper to pay a monthly fee than to buy every album you want to listen to, or every movie you want to watch. As of 2012, iTunes still dominated the EST market compared to vudu/UV so it's not really a driving factor that will compel Disney to support UV. Disney needs to see broad consumer demand for UV before it will adopt the format. I think that means at least 25 -30 million users. They also need to see the common file format widely deployed on a broad array of devices, and Google Play or Amazon Video store support, before Disney will join the initiative. Won't happen until CES 2016

well you are speculating as to their decision criteria. I respectfully disagree.

iTunes dominates the EST market for playback onto an iOS device. This is the mobile playback market.

There are no numbers I can find and am left to piece the picture together from a few subjective sources, but it seems that a parity has been reached in the domestic market between iTunes and UV for in-home playback onto a TV in the MPAA EST market. UV may have even taken the lead in this sub-set market space.

Regardless of the specific numbers, the trend is unambiguously clear. UV is on a hockey stick increase with solid consumer approval and studio backing. I respectfully suggest that this alone is sufficient to make Disney Studios move to DECE distribution sooner rather then later.

Re: Disney's Frozen - Digital HD - Not Ultraviolet

I would argue that there is zero reason for Disney to join UV, and that's not necessairly a bad thing. If a provider such as Vudu were to allow you to connect to your DMA account (just like you do now to your UV account), then your Disney movies will show up right along side your UV movies, which is all anybody really needs anyway. That's what Disney will eventually allow us to do, and they know it, and it will work fine for us, and... there you go

Re: Disney's Frozen - Digital HD - Not Ultraviolet

I understand it is a nuance. If every studio did as you suggest DMA will be doing perpetually, it would lead to a fragmented market for the emerging technology.

People who enjoy having their home entertainment library digitally available from multiple streaming providers, having the ability to share their library with friends and family, and who wish to store files for off-line playback are best served with the technology maturing under a single umbrella.

Too many chefs spoil the stew, the saying goes. Once there was bluray disc and HD-DVD. BRD won the day and now X-Box console ship with BRD compatibility for this very reason.

Everyone's (studios & consumers) best interests are served when there is consolidation onto a single standard of delivery.
