Frankenweenie is a 4:3 image stretched to 16:9. It looks awful. I bought it because it was on sale for 2.99 in SD (only SD is available), but I called and asked for a refund when I saw the aspect ratio.

My Oppo 93 has always stretched ALL standard-def 4x3 content from Vudu, and some HDX titles like Wizard of Oz- for those it depends if they encoded the side bars as part of the frame or not. I wish they'd fix that, but that isn't my primary device for Vudu anyways.

there is a setting on my onkyo receiver that fixed it.. while its only a couple of movies.. they both show up stretched on my oppo 93 and the roku 3. something is up on that. I think its more on vudu then my system.

I replaced my tv with a projector.. the projector has a proper setting for 4:3.. so I can un-stretch the two movies that I own in vudu both on the oppo 93 and the roku 3.

I also have yet to see a new encode after saying they would request one. The only time I've seen it done is when I contacted the studio myself and asked them to send a new encode to Vudu. I'm not sure Vudu is asking or that the studio cares once they're asked by Vudu?

So you had to do Vudu's job for them. Amazing. I wonder if Vudu is even asking for new encodes or if they just say that because they think it sounds good. In any case, the "new encode request" response is just a joke now and can't be taken seriously.

Does Vudu have any sort of quality control? It's a ridiculous the number of issues there are with their inventory. I bought a tv series where I found the audio was out of sync with one of the episodes. It took them almost a year to acknowledge it and they gave the usual "we'll request a new encode" response, which never happens. They've ignored all of my follow up inquiries.

I know that sometimes you need to set your TV or blu-Ray player to show a movie or show in the correct format because the default setting might stretch all shows/movies to 16:9 even if that was not how they were filmed. I can't help but think there must be a box they need to check off on some of these film's settings that tells them to display it in 4:3 and not 16:9. It doesn't make sense any other way. Why would Universal send everyone a perfectly good encode for Frankenstein EXCEPT for Vudu, and send them a broken one? It makes no sense. I am certain of it. There has to be something the content team needs to do on Vudu's end in order to get the stretched films like The Mummy, Frankenstein, Revenger of the Nerds III and IV, and Creature From the Black Lagoon to display properly.

I purchased 'American Scary' close to two years ago, and the aspect ratio was wrong. It was a 16:9 image being squeezed to 4:3. I paid money for it. It wasn't a D2D, it was one I purchased outright. I opened a ticket. That ticket was opened on 3/2/2014. The ticket is marked as 'closed', but the issue has NOT been resolved! on 9/13/2015 Vudu responded "We're waiting on redelivery of the fixed file from the responsible studio. Since it depends on how long they take to provide us with this content, we cannot offer an estimated fix by date." I took matters into my own hands and contacted the studio myself. They said that Vudu has the exact same file that was sent to every other digital provider and no one else had an issue with it.

have them check the abyss and wizard of oz (1939) while they are at it.
both play fine on flixster and cinema now. it also worked fine on target.
the abyss played in widescreen and was enhanced for widescreen on the flixster and cinema now. you see more detail then the dvd.

I did a Disc 2 Digital transfer on SHANGHAI TRIAD.

Even though it was only in SD, I figured it would look as good as my dvd, so I have it a shot. The movie is windowboxed on all 4 sides, letterboxed in a 4X3 transfer. It's UNWATCHABLE. I cannot believe that transfers like these were ever provided.
