Re: VUDU AT HOME: DISC-TO-DIGITAL Bugs?

Still having trouble with the Friday the 13th: From Crystal Lake to Manhattan Ultimate Collection dvd set, UPC Code: 097360523348, where it is two movies per disc. I am trying to do the part 7 and 8 disc to get part 7 but it keeps coming up and saying that it is part 8 and I already own that movie in HDX on Vudu.

        • Liam Neeson, Taken (Unrated, Extended Cut) BluRay shows up as John Cena, The Marine (Unrated) BluRay
        • Zombieland (Theatrical) BluRay shows up with "This disc is not eligible for disc-to-digital, please insert another disc or try again later."

Both titles are available for D2D on the Vudu D2D website.
I tried the "not your disc?" for Taken (Unrated, Extended Cut); the drop-down list showed a total of 3 'Taken' in BluRay format and several other selections, but would not allow me to expand the list to see any details to choose the correct one.

I've also had significant issues with Vudu's At Home Disc to Digital beta project. It's of significant concern since they have $40 of my money for which I received premium "HDX" product that is inferior to the DVDs that I already have. Since it is a beta, I'm sympathetic as long as they refund my money promptly. Also, there were some DVD conversions for which I seem to have purchased high quality digital rights and I think I'm happy with (I haven't fully watched these movies yet).

First the problems: Eight of the DVD for which I tried to buy the Vudu HDX digital rights actually have simple stereo sound only. This is despite the HDX product being advertised as "7.1" and the DVDs generally already having Dolby Digital 5.1 (might not be true for Little Shop of Horrors). This is totally unacceptable as I view I paid for upgrades to HDX, but actually ended up with a product that I feel is inferior to my existing DVDs. I would rather watch my existing DVDs than these supposed "HDX" versions. The movies for which this was an issue are as follows:

Harry Porter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring
          A Christmas Story
          Batman Begins
          Little Shop of Horrors
          Sixteen Candles
          Dr. Zhivago

It is my belief that if a HDX product doesn't have 7.1 audio, this should be clearly highlighted prior to when the purchase is made; this wasn't the case. I have put in a request for refund for these movie upgrades...I'll be very disappointed and lose faith in Vudu if they don't come through with the refunds very promptly.

Please note that there were 8 other DVD movies that I converted/upgraded to HDX that seem to have better than just stereo audio. Based on my limited viewing, I think I'm going to be happy with these others. They include the 2nd and 3rd LOTR movies, Harry Potter movies 3-6, School of Rock, and Caroline.

Movies that couldn't be converted/upgraded due to lack of the appropriate digital rights include:
          Willow
          The Sure Thing
          Saving Private Ryan
          Blazing Saddles
Bridge Over The River Kuai (not available in HD so I didn't convert)

Hopefully, Vudu will treat their customers right and fully correct the problem quickly or provide a quick refund.
Add "Chocolat" to the sound problem list. According to me receiver, it is sending a multi-channel signal, but no sound is coming from the side/rear channels.

VUDU customer service said they would get back to me with help by last Friday, but they didn't. I call them and they now won't give any estimate of when they will respond. They won't give me a refund either...extremely poor way to treat customers. Just because they call this a beta doesn't mean that it is ok to abuse their customers. A prompt refund would be the right thing to do while they investigate the problems. I had hoped to convert much of my collection, but until they show customer respect I'll be making future purchases on other services.

They also told me that they don't give refunds on the BETA program. I wish it would get out of BETA already.

Not sure if this helps or not, but the Disc to Digital Program is beta. The Video streaming service and your issues with encoding and sound are not part of the beta program. If one purchased those movies from VUDU not using Disc to Digital they presumedly would have the same issues.

I saw that the LOTR Fellowship of the Ring is available for purchase through Vudu. I watched the preview and the preview is broadcast in surround sound. However, the supposed "HDX" version that I got through the disc to digital home beta is only in stereo. Or some reason different and lesser sound tracks are bing made available to disc to digital home beta purchasers. Very odd and unacceptable.

Re: VUDU AT HOME: DISC-TO-DIGITAL Bugs? SOUND PROBLEMS??

                    Hi VUDU,

Is any investigating the issues where HDX home disc to digital purchases don't have surround sound, but only have stereo sound? I have this problem with about half my conversions/purchases...now 9 disc conversions. On all but one of them, my receiver indicates that it is only getting a "stereo" signal. For Chocolat, it says it is getting a "multi-channel" signal but no sound is coming from the surround channels. The sound seems fine on several other upgrade/conversion purchases to HDX that I made.

I encourage everyone to check the sound quality on their conversions/upgrades/purchases and note any problems on the forum.

Below is the list of my "HDX" purchases that have problems. These were all upgrade using DVD's I have at home and I paid the higher price for the upgrade to HdX. The sound quality on my DVD's is better than the sound on the "HDX" files that I have access to...needs to be fixed.

Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring
                    Harry Potter: sorcerer's Stone
                    Harry Potter: Chamber of Secrets
                    Batman Begins
                    A Christmas Story
                    Sixteen Candles
                    Dr. Zhivago
                    Little Shop of Horrors
                    Chocolat

VUDU SUPPORT, please give some feedback on what is being done to resolve this issue. Than you.

I'm collecting the remaining issue so the engineering can take a look.
I would suggest to try again when you see "Please try again". If you see it couple of times then there is a chance that we have issue to read the disc TOC. That is the worse case as we can't collect the TOC and you can't even enter suggestion for us to map.

                      Thanks,
                      LLN
If (one of the things) it's collecting is TOC then why are Blu-Ray's a problem with constant access under XP, especially when I can browse and access the files directly in Explorer with no problem?

I just did a little more research on what I'm seeing regarding the sound problem, when I look at the "More Info" in the my VUDU system page for each of these purchases with sound problems, it says the HDX sound is "Dolby Digital Stereo" for all of the movies except for Harry Potter: The Sorcerer's Stone & Chocolat. For Harry Potter: The Sorcerer's Stone movie it doesn't give any indication of the sound quality. For Chocolate is says Dolby Digital 5.1, but no sound is coming from the surround channels when the movie is played.

The source DVDs have Dolby Digital 5.1 surround for the following movies: Batman Begins, Doctor Zhivago, Lord of The Rings The Fellowship of the Ring, Harry Potter an the Sorcerer's Stone, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Because the old DVDs have Dolby Digital 5.1, the HDX files should also have at least that sound quality if they aren't upgraded to 7.1.

The source DVDs for Chocolat, A Christmas Story, The Little Shop of Horrors, and Sixteen Candles only indicate "Dolby Digital", so maybe a surround sound version of those movies isn't available. However, I suspect that a bluray of those movies would have upgraded sound to Dolby Digital 5.1 or better; if this is the case the HDX files should also be in Dolby Digital 5.1.

I hope this extra information helps VUDU support figure out the problem with the files.

Just to clarify, when you do D2D, you're simply getting a discount on the license for the normal Vudu version of the movie; there's no uploading of the video or audio, and no special D2D version. So the problem isn't with the conversions themselves, but with Vudu's one source file from the studio. If they had it available in DD+, believe me, it would be available on Vudu in DD+. More than a few Vudu staffers are audiophiles/home theater geeks like us, and they look for those things too.

Unfortunately, there are a few movies that are only in stereo, but really, when you boil it down Vudu's choices are to 1) leave it available in stereo (and hopefully fix it eventually if the studio cooperates), or 2) withdraw that movie from their catalog altogether.

But if you open a ticket, in my experience they will always try to get a better encoding, it may just take a while.

This seems to make sense. However, I'm sceptical. One of the movies that doesn't have Dolby 5.1 is the Lord of the Rings Fellowship of the Ring. VUDU now has a promotion for the Lord of the Rings series and the movie trailer/preview that they are using includes the 5.1 or 7.1 sound track. I'm curious if anyone bought an original copy of the Fellowship of the Ring through VUDU rather than using Disc-to-Digital. If you did, please let us know what sound quality you have.

I strongly believe that VUDU should not be calling something HDX if they don't at least have a sound track that equals what is available on DVD. In fact I believe that HDX sound would at match Bluray. If a purchase is going to deviate from that standard it should very clearly disclosed.

At the moment, I feel like I wasted $45 on the HDX upgrades and was deceived into doing so. Hopefully, VUDU will refund my funds if they can't upgrade sound to at least DVD quality quickly; this would be the proper thing to do and would result in them getting more business in the long-run.
